Guidance to Foreigner Who Want to Teach in Indonesia

Indonesia is so surprised, isn't? I write about this because my lecturers (English native speaker) pretty don't understand about Indonesian culture. Actually, It is very personal but let me tell you.

1. Let me know about you.

We are so exciting for having lecturer, a foreigner. Really we are. We like to know your background. You may not believe it but, a lecturer that I ever had,  Mr. M,  when we asking where he is from, he just answer 'somewhere'. What do you think? For me, It is annoying but we, I mean I, already understand this different culture. 

Many Indonesian people may ask you "Where are you going?" and you begin to think 'mind your business'. Well, btw it is not really a question, it is let's say greeting. We are not really need a real answer. You don't have to say place where you go. So, don't be mad.

The second question that may also annoying is, "Do you have a shower?" or "Have a shower?". It usually for foreigner who live in society. I mean not in a hotel or like that. This question is also a greeting. It does not mean that you look messy or others. It just greeting! OK...

Back to the topic, please introduction yourself; your name, your coming to Indonesia, your view about Indonesia, your country, your experience of going abroad. It is a first key to get your students' heart.

2. Don't sit on the table. It is not polite even we will not be reprimanded.

3. Keep your tongue! You don't know if your students understand what you are talking, right? 

4. Rubber time.

 You may so boring with this,  me too. In Indonesia, the toleration of being late is 15 minutes. (I think it will depend on situation and its personal). Actually, when I have a meeting or discussion with friends at 13.00, we will gather at 13.30. It is friendship matter but we can go on time (for some urgent). I don't know what happened but yes that's what happened. I know it so annoying but I also can not handle it. Just let it, because when you being harsh, they will keep more late. If you are on time, you will get respect. It will make your students try to on time. And in my mind that must be like that because you are a foreigner. And foreigner is not coming late. That's a stereotype that keep in my mind about foreigner.

5. Silent Voices

I don't want to tell about this. If you ask a question and you will likely find there is no question. It doesn't mean we don't understand. Just follow this link. 

6. Hurry Up!

We play slowly. If you ask your students to move or make a group. We will move slowly, or maybe about a minute have nothing but silent. You have to be patient. If you ask your students to coming to the class, we will pointing each other and again slowly. Usually your respond is "Come on!! What are you doing?"

7. Compliment

Don't give to much compliment. It will sound different. At least, in Java, if I say that's good it mean it is not good or there is something fishy. We know our capacity, so don't give too much. 

What else?? Emh....smile is best make up. Do you have bad experience?

My lucky

I don't know what will it be....It is just part of me, in front the screen and feel boring. Many things is fun and more often, happiness is hard to describe. Sadness is like smoke, trying to blur all the luckiness we ever had. Just swipe and see we look so dump in blame.

Part 14: New Media Was Presented

What's up! Btw,  there is no part 12, 13?? Whatever.
Our makroflash media was finished and the presentation get good response. We got 100 points,  too much. I feel like... it is weird to get that perfect mark. Thanks for Liya Ilmiasih and Riezqy Binta Khaeza to not giving up. Thanks for Fajrie for sharing and someone for kindness and having time to share, critic and so on. We will fix this media again...Just wait! I will upload after all finish!

Feeling great to not miss this subject till last stand.

Self Trace

One day, long time ago, I got a message from someone I don't know. It is a man from somewhere. I was not try to ignore, I thought, it would be fun for having friend from others. He asked my name, where I live, and soon. I answered, not lie but not easy to understand. I asked some question. He did not tell himself and  I never push someone to tell the truth about himself, I really don't care about it cos I thought we would never meet and I thought people could communicate without see who you are. I wonder. I kept my identity and conversation began. Till, he sent me a message and accosted me with clear name. I surprised because he was someone I know. I got shame, but he began speak rudely to me. I cut him off and I changed my number. It did not mean anything cos he know me but at least not in phone. Since that day, when a new number called and I don't know who you are, I will ask your name. This question is like a password for me, when you did not answer it, or just play with me, I will not care. I will not being anxious, It is easy to me to delete. When, you still ask me why I did not call you. It is simple, may be you  ignore this question before.

That's make me easy to understand why my friend hate cat, why my friend don't like butterfly. I believe there is a history behind their respond. It begin long time ago...

Part 11: Show Up

Class was so crowded. My friend was busy to prepare their film. We were ready, yet. We already make our film long ago since my lecturer tell us about kind of component of learning media. I was I mean we, were not making new video since that. The show must go on. The other group came up, and do their job well. Okay, I think again to make others. Discussion begin!

Part 10: Short Movie


One of the component of media is video or film. We make video using camera or handy cam. First time, I do not care about how the resolution of camera and the light impact the quality of the picture. The first video we make is quite messy. The picture is trembled, we don't use tripod and the light is hazy.

There are some step to making video:

 1.  Pra- production

In this session, the scenario was done. The plot of the story is set. Here, the producer, the script writer, and director discuss to deal with the script.

2. Artistic
The producer and artistic deal with all aspect that want to come out or show in the film. For example; the location, property, wardrobe, etc.

3. Equipment
The equipment for the shooting like camera or handy-cam, lighting, mic, etc.

4. Casting
 Casting is choosing the artist that suitable with the character we need.

5. Rehearsal
It helps the shooting process to limit the mistake. Review the blocking and so on to keep in the wanted concept.

5. Shooting
The taking picture process is coming. The director takes charge of what going to do in this process.

6. Editing Process
This is the last session in making film. Editing is used to get the perfect film, we can cut, add some effects, connecting the scene to the scene, etc.

7. Publication
We also want to see the people watch the film we make. What we do is publication, join festival, registering to cinema, or the easiest way is uploading to the YouTube.

Part 9: Audio Narration

Audio is one part that cannot be separated from the media we make. We used Audicity. This application is good to recording and editing audio. By using this application we can mixing the song, remove the sound from the music, recording, of course.

In the learning media, we use this to make narration. The narration is not use all along in the media. You can also record and make your own song and album, Greattt!

Part 8: Macromedia Flash

After stuck with PowerPoint we go on to the not new but, here is Macromedia flash. When other people so familiar about it, we just know this software. This is why  part 5 called incomplete because we will convert it into new media. Just wait!! We got 2 days for Macromedia flash training. Poorly, I cannot join in it. So, I just googled the tutorial from website.


I also find some media make by others, so cooooool. Can I make like it coolerrr? I wonder....

From this paper; Munir says there is the advantages of using Technology, include Macromedia Interactive:
  • Helping to understanding the material discussed.
  • Helping to explain the abstract material to become the concrete one.
  • Helping  teacher to present the material easier to understand and catch the eye, so students will remember and easy to retell.
  • The media is interesting arousing attention, interest, motivation, creativity, and amusing the students.
  • To push the students' participation and giving deep understanding in their mind.
  • The media can be replay.
  • To make same opinion understanding and correct perception about object.
  • Making good conducive place to study. 
Yeaah, you know laaah, why using Macromedia is better. Ja!

Part 7: Checking Other Media

Our media already presented. Not bad! We got some ideas and critics about it. What I am talking is the media in the part 5. Thanks for all critics, comment, and suggestion.

Here is the point in the rubric assessment of the media we made:
a. Material 20%
b. Picture10%
c. Sound 10 %
d. Animation/ Video 20%
e. Exercises 20%
f. Feed back  20%

And our job is to assess this media; made by Fatah, Rosa Meiana. They make media about News Item. What do you think?? Good Job Fatah and friends!!

Part 6: Procedure text, A teaching media (incomplete)

Mid-term examination already finished. We made a teaching media used PowerPoint for IT subject. This project was began from the first meeting, because thousand reasons it just finished. We, the three musketeers, was messing because of this. We are so left behind of technology, this project makes me feel more like that. Do you want to see...I tried to no make a fool of us. Here the project coming out "Procedure text". We still Power Point, we hope later we can convert it to Macroflash or others.

I know it just a short, but I hope it will help you to realize I'm stuck..Good luck! Happy learning!

Part 5: Using ASSURE

 We found out that in SMA N 1 Pleret:  

1. Analyze learners.
a. Students of each class are about 28- 30 students in grade 10 and 11.
b. They all cooperate with the teacher
c. They like to discuss with others
d. They are shy to be a participant, or to coming in front of the class.
e. They are less motivation to learn English.

2. State Objective
a. The students will be able to know how language used in real life.
b. They are motivated to use language inn the class.
c. The movie will give new paradigm to learn English.

 3. Select, Modify, Design Method, Media, Materials.
a. Teacher use lecture and group work.
b. Teacher uses vidio and pictures in the classroomc.
c. Teacher shows the material by screen.

4. Utilize Method, Media and Material
a. Teacher copy the material and share to all the students (printable material)

5. Require Learner Participation.
a Learner will present their discussion
b. Learner will make cardboard in group

6. Evaluate and Revise.
a. Students are interesting with picture and video. We think that video is effective for teaching English in SMA N 1 Pleret because there are some many facilities that support the teaching learning process.

Part 4: ASSURE learning's model

Assure model intergate technology into the lesson plan. Here some steps you need to do in this model:

Analyze the leader. We need know who are our students: include their prior knowledge, learning abilities, learning styles, motivation, sex, environment, etc.Every student is different, so it is not suppose to being equal.

State your objective as specific as possible. Objective have to present ABCD- Audience, the students itself, Behavior, Condition, and Degree.

Utilize your media and materials. We have to preview the m aterial, check out the material and make it sure it suitable to use. Then, prepare all you need to present the media or material. Next: prepare the invorenment, which must be conducive to the learner. It includes the classroom, the space, all you need in the class. And the last, provide the learning experience.

Require Learning Participation. All activities in the class provide opportunities to manipulate the information and allow time for practice during the demonstration of the skill.

Evaluate and Revises. Before, during and after the learning- teaching process, teacher do evaluation, assess learner and the media and method
